High Compression of Colour Images with Nonuniform Sampling

چکیده
Transform coding of images and video with nonuniformly sampled chrominance is proposed for applications requiring very high compression. The proposed coding scenario applies adaptive subsampling of chrominance according to local activity detected in luminance component. Blockbased transform coding is adopted to coding of images whose samples are taken from an irregular grid. This irregular grid is warped into a regular orthogonal grid. The proposed approach displays the benefits of nonuniform sampling at no additional cost related to transmission of sampling grid.
